Learning Objectives
A case study showing how a Melbourne outdoor living (decking/pergola) sole operator generated 256 leads in 11 months using long-tail SEO, structured service and suburb pages, and short-term Google Ads as a traffic bridge while organic rankings built up.
By the end of this module, you’ll be able to:
- Build a profitable SEO campaign for competitive local services on a realistic budget
- Target long-tail keywords that deliver commercial value without massive spend
- Structure service pages and geo pages that actually convert
- Calculate real lead value and set honest expectations with conservative metrics
- Use strategic Google Ads as a temporary bridge while organic rankings build
Key Concepts
Long-tail keywords – Specific search phrases with lower competition but high commercial intent. Instead of “decking” (3,300 searches/month, highly competitive), target “composite decking Melbourne” (500 searches/month, much easier to rank).
Geo pages – Location-specific service pages targeting suburbs within your service area. Think “Deck Builder Brighton” or “Pergola Installation Richmond” – these capture local searches when people are ready to buy.
Rank-and-rent sites – Authority websites you own that generate leads, which you can redirect to client campaigns while also using for natural backlink placement. A genuine deck builder Sydney site that mentions fence builders creates authentic link profiles.
Traffic potential – The total organic traffic the #1 ranking page receives from all keywords it ranks for. More valuable than search volume alone because it shows the real opportunity.
The Real-World Numbers: What AHREFS Data Tells Us
Here’s what I pulled from AHREFS for the outdoor living space in Australia:
High-competition broad terms (what most people chase):
- “pergola” – 16,000 searches/month, difficulty 6, CPC $1.10
- “bathroom renovations” – 11,000 searches/month, difficulty 6, CPC $1.70
- “outdoor living” – 2,700 searches/month, difficulty 34, CPC $0.45
Smarter local targets (where sole operators can win):
- “deck builder melbourne” – 150 searches/month, difficulty 23, CPC $1.70, traffic potential 600
- “pergola builder melbourne” – 150 searches/month, difficulty 24, CPC $2.00, traffic potential 900
- “composite decking melbourne” – 500 searches/month, difficulty 0, CPC $1.30
Long-tail goldmine (zero difficulty, ready buyers):
- “modern pergola attached to house” – 100 searches/month, $0.80 CPC
- “best timber decking” – 30 searches/month, $0.80 CPC
- “enclose pergola” – 30 searches/month, $0.80 CPC
Notice the pattern? Lower volume, higher intent, dramatically easier to rank. That’s the strategy.
Real-World Case Study
Case Study: Outdoor Living Specialist – Sole Operator – Melbourne Metro
The Challenge
A one-person outdoor living business came to me with a website that had been mistreated for years. Previous agencies had left it in shambles:
- Images were 8MB each (multiple per page)
- Terrible hosting (SiteGround, but with zero optimisation)
- Built in Elementor with caching nightmares
- Not indexed properly by Google
- Zero organic traffic despite being live for years
- Competing against multi-location companies with established brands
The client needed leads immediately but had a realistic budget. They offered decks, pergolas, carports, garage renovations, and verandas across a 20-30km radius in Melbourne.
The Strategy
I took a conservative, staged approach:
Phase 1: Foundation (Month 1-2)
- Complete website rebuild keeping the existing design aesthetics
- Compressed all images to 50-100KB (proper sizing + WebP format)
- Removed all EXIF data and unnecessary colour profiles
- Set up proper hosting with Cloudflare
- Created an SEO audit of top 20 competitors using Screaming Frog
- Mapped out 30 service pages targeting realistic keywords
Phase 2: Content Structure (Month 2-4)
- Built 30 service pages (decks, pergolas, carports, garage renovations, etc.)
- Created 62 geo pages targeting specific Melbourne suburbs
- Published 62 blogs clustered around their bread-and-butter services:
- 18 posts on outdoor decking
- 20 posts on pergolas
- Various posts on verandas, carports, and alfresco areas
- All content written from the client’s perspective using interview questions
Phase 3: Backlinks & Authority (Ongoing)
- Monthly backlink campaigns from my network of white-hat rank-and-rent sites
- Listicle placements (“Top 10 Fence Builders Sydney” naturally mentioning deck builders)
- Strategic mentions from genuine, related businesses in the home improvement space
- Hidden many backlinks from AHREFS crawler to maintain privacy
Phase 4: Paid Bridge (Month 1-4)
- Ran Google Ads targeting exact-match commercial keywords
- 20km radius around service area
- $2,600 total spend over 3-4 months
- CPC averaged $19 for keywords that actually mattered
- Leads ranged from $80-$150 each
- Turned off ads once organic traffic picked up
The Results
Over 11 months from website launch:
Lead Generation:
- 128 confirmed web form leads (tracked with full details)
- Client reported approximately double in phone calls
- Conservative calculation: 256 total leads
- Average: 23 leads per month
Organic Growth:
- 1,900 organic clicks from Google Search Console
- Pages indexed and climbing in rankings by month 3
- Traffic spike visible from June onwards
- Google Ads turned off by mid-year as organic took over
Conservative Revenue Calculations: At 6% conversion (terrible sales): $130,000 revenue
At 15% conversion (average sales): $600,000 revenue
At 30% conversion (good sales): $1.8M revenue
I never promise these figures. I just like understanding potential value. The client had never had marketing that worked before – suddenly they’re fielding weekend calls and turning away work they can’t service.
The Lesson
A sole operator can absolutely compete in a crowded space like outdoor living. The secret isn’t outspending the big players on “deck builder” or “pergola” – it’s being smarter about which battles to fight. Target “composite decking Brighton” instead of “decking.” Go after “modern pergola attached to house” instead of “pergola.” Build out 30 service pages plus 62 geo pages that capture every variation of how someone might search. Industry Application:
This exact playbook works for:
- Electricians – Target “Mitsubishi air con installation Hawthorn” not “electrician”
- Accountants – Target “SMSF accountant South Yarra” not “accountant Melbourne”
- Landscapers – Target “retaining wall builder Camberwell” not “landscaping”
- Plumbers – Target “hot water system replacement Malvern” not “plumber”
The little guy can win when you fight on your terms.
Implementation Guide
Step 1: Conduct Brutal Website Audit
What it looks like:
Log into the existing website. Check image sizes (8MB images are criminal). Test page speed on mobile. Look at what’s actually indexed in Google Search Console. Most small business sites are disasters – bloated, slow, unoptimised. Pro tip:
Use GTmetrix or Google PageSpeed Insights. If images are over 200KB each, you’ve got work to do. WebP format + proper sizing should get you to 50-100KB per image. Don’t just compress – actually resize to the display dimensions.
Step 2: Map Realistic Keywords
What it looks like:
Open AHREFS or SEMrush. Punch in your main service + city. Look at:
- Search volume (anything above 10/month is worth considering)
- Keyword difficulty (under 30 is manageable for new sites)
- CPC (shows commercial intent – if people are paying $2-4 per click, it’s valuable)
For our deck builder:
- ✅ “composite decking melbourne” – 500 vol, 0 difficulty
- ✅ “deck builder brighton” – 10 vol, low difficulty
- ❌ “bathroom renovations” – 11,000 vol, 6 difficulty (too competitive)
Pro tip:
Divide your keyword list into “realistic” and “forget about it.” You’re still going to build the “bathroom renovations” page if you offer the service – just don’t expect to rank for it year one.
Step 3: Build Service Page Structure
What it looks like:
30 service pages covering every variation:
- Deck installation
- Composite decking
- Timber decking
- Pool deck construction
- Deck repair
- Pergola installation
- Pergola repair
- Carport construction
- Garage renovation
- Veranda construction
Each page: 800-1,200 words, local images, clear CTAs, schema markup.
Pro tip:
Interview your client or yourself. “What questions do people always ask?” Turn those into FAQ sections and subheadings. Real experience beats generic content every time.
Step 4: Create Geo Pages
What it looks like:
62 pages targeting suburbs within your service radius:
- Deck Builder Brighton
- Deck Builder Richmond
- Pergola Installation Hawthorn
- Carport Builder Malvern
Each geo page should be genuinely unique. Mention local landmarks, projects you’ve done in the area, specific council requirements.
Pro tip:
Don’t just find-and-replace suburb names. Google sees through that. Add real local context: “We’ve built 15 decks in Brighton, from the beachside homes near Middle Brighton station to family properties near Were Street.”
Step 5: Strategic Blog Clusters
What it looks like:
Pick your three bread-and-butter services. Write 15-20 posts around each:
Decking cluster:
- “5 Composite Decking Brands We Recommend in Melbourne”
- “How Much Does a Deck Cost in 2025?”
- “Deck Maintenance: What Most Melbourne Homeowners Get Wrong”
Pergola cluster:
- “Modern Pergola Ideas for Small Backyards”
- “Pergola vs Gazebo: Which is Right for You?”
- “How to Enclose a Pergola in Melbourne (Council Regulations)”
Pro tip:
Use the client’s actual experience. “In 15 years, I’ve seen three main mistakes homeowners make when choosing composite decking…” That’s gold. AI can’t replicate real experience.
Step 6: Run Temporary Google Ads
What it looks like:
Set up a campaign targeting exact-match keywords within 20km:
- [deck builder melbourne]
- [pergola builder melbourne]
- [composite decking melbourne]
Budget: $500-1,000/month for 3-4 months. Track every lead. Turn off once organic kicks in (usually month 4-6).
Pro tip:
Don’t use broad match. Ever. You’ll pay for “deck cleaning” and “pergola ideas” – informational rubbish. Exact match only. Your CPC will be $15-25 for commercial terms, but every click matters.
Step 7: Build Authority Through Backlinks
What it looks like:
Monthly link building from relevant, genuine sites:
- Guest posts on home improvement blogs
- Listings on industry directories (not spammy ones)
- Mentions from complementary businesses (landscapers mentioning deck builders)
- Rank-and-rent sites if you have them
Pro tip:
One quality backlink from a DR50+ home improvement site beats 50 directory listings. Focus on relevance and authority. A mention from a popular Melbourne architecture blog? Gold.
Common Pitfalls & Solutions
Pitfall: Chasing high-volume keywords too early
Fix: Target long-tail, low-competition terms first
Prevention: Use AHREFS difficulty score. Under 30 = green light for new sites Pitfall: Identical geo pages with just suburb names swapped
Fix: Add unique local context to each page (landmarks, projects, council info)
Prevention: Spend 20 minutes per geo page, not 2 minutes Pitfall: 8MB images destroying page speed
Fix: Resize to display dimensions, compress to WebP, aim for 50-100KB
Prevention: Set image compression as a non-negotiable in your workflow Pitfall: Running Google Ads forever without building organic
Fix: Use ads as a temporary bridge, invest in SEO simultaneously
Prevention: Set a 3-6 month ad timeline with defined organic goals Pitfall: Generic blog content that doesn’t rank or convert
Fix: Interview the business owner, extract real experience and advice
Prevention: Never publish a blog without at least one piece of unique client insight
Practical Exercise
Quick Win (5 minutes)
Use AHREFS or Google Keyword Planner right now. Enter your main service + your city. Find 3 long-tail keywords with:
- 10+ monthly searches
- Difficulty under 25
- CPC above $1.00
Write them down. These are your first three service pages.
Deep Dive (30 minutes)
Audit your current website:
- Check image sizes (developer tools → Network tab → Images)
- Run Google PageSpeed Insights
- List every broken or slow element
- Check Google Search Console – what’s actually indexed?
- Create a priority list: what must be fixed this month?
Real Business Application
For Tradies (Electricians, Plumbers, Builders):
Map out 10 service pages (air con installation, hot water systems, switchboard upgrades, etc.) and 20 geo pages covering your service area. Focus on brand-specific keywords (“Mitsubishi air con installation Camberwell”) – these have lower competition and higher intent. For Professional Services (Accountants, Financial Advisors):
Target niche services + suburbs. “SMSF accountant South Yarra” beats “accountant Melbourne” every time. Build thought leadership blogs around specific tax scenarios your clients actually face. For Retail & Hospitality (Cafés, Florists, Restaurants):
Geo pages are your friend. “Wedding flowers Melbourne CBD,” “Birthday flowers Hawthorn,” “Anniversary flowers Richmond.” Every suburb within 5km gets a page.

Module Summary
The little guy absolutely can win in competitive spaces like outdoor living, trades, and professional services. The key isn’t matching the big players’ budgets – it’s being smarter about:
- Target realistic keywords: Long-tail, low-difficulty terms with commercial intent beat vanity volume every time
- Build proper structure: 30 service pages + 62 geo pages captures every search variation
- Use ads as a bridge: $2,600 over 3-4 months keeps leads flowing while SEO builds
- Calculate conservatively: Understand lead value but never promise unrealistic results
This sole operator generated 256 leads in 11 months because we fought smart, not big. That’s the playbook.
SEO Data Summary (From AHREFS, January 2025)
High-value local targets:
- Deck builder Melbourne: 150/mo, difficulty 23, $1.70 CPC
- Pergola builder Sydney: 200/mo, difficulty 14, $3.50 CPC
- Composite decking Melbourne: 500/mo, difficulty 0, $1.30 CPC
Long-tail opportunities (zero difficulty):
- Modern pergola attached to house: 100/mo
- Best timber decking: 30/mo
- Enclose pergola: 30/mo
What this means: Target the 150-500 volume local terms first, sprinkle in 20-100 volume long-tails, and watch the compound effect over 6-12 months.
